In short: tremendous focus on exceptional risk management. Says Blankfein, Goldman Sachs spends so much effort on creating contingency plans for each of its investment theses, that when things go wrong and they must adopt a Plan B, they are so prepared and quick-footed that their first move often looks like just a "false start."
